How many years should I register my domain name for? Print

Thousands of domain names expire every day. So much so that an entire industry has evolved to serve the needs of people trying to locate good domains that have or will expire soon. Individuals, companies and organizations can lose their domain names due to reasons such as:

- The webmaster forgets to renew the domain by the expiry date.
- The email address that the domain is registered with becomes invalid, and the domain name registrant doesn't receive the renewal notices.
- Other reasons for losing one's domain include: hijacking, employee sabotage, and even computer or clerical errors. Allowing one's domain name to expire could result in websites and e-mail being disrupted for days, even weeks. If your domain name is important to you or you want to avoid the inconvenience of losing your domain, we recommend that you register your domain name for as long as you can afford and set the "auto renew" option in your Billing Manager to Yes.
